Winter League:

Vision:

The Vision of the Great Valley Basketball League (GVBL) is to create a fun experience for the kids, playing and learning the game of basketball, while competing with their peers from the surrounding community. The programs are built around learning, fun and community. Players of all abilities are welcome. The goal is to teach all of the players the rules of the game and proper way to play basketball.

The winter league is split into grade divisions. Each division focuses on appropriate age level skills to help the athletes improve while showing good sportsmanship. All players participate in an evaluation and teams are selected in a draft-style format.

Grade Divisions:

  • Grades 1-2;  Grades 3-4;  Grades 5-6;  Grades 7-8

Players are required to play in their division. No exceptions are granted to play up or down into another division.

Winter Basketball League General Information:

  • The winter league generally runs from early November until early March.
  • Each team has one practice session per week and one weekend game.
  • The Girls 7-8 Division will meet on 1 weeknight per week only at a GVSD gym.
  • All players receive a team jersey.
  • Older age groups (grades 5+) will practice at area schools.
  • Younger age groups (grades 4 and below) will practice at Bacton Hill Rd.
  • GVBL holds one major fundraiser at the end of the season.

Game Information

  • Games are generally played at the GVBL Center, 19 North Bacton Hill Rd., Malvern. The Girls 7-8 Division may play games at a GVSD gym.
  • Each team will play a  10-12 game season.
  • Grades 3 and above will participate in a double elimination playoff at the end of the season.
  • Grades 1 and 2 will play in a one day round-robin tournament at the end of their season.

Playing Time:

Equal playing time for all athletes is strictly enforced during the season and the playoffs. All players will be a part of the game and get a chance to touch the ball as much as possible

Parents/Volunteer Expectations:

GVBL is a 100% volunteer run organization. Parent volunteers will be asked to coach teams, help keep score and keep track of fouls.

We expect parents to lead by example in terms of behavior during games. Understand that our referees are coaches who volunteered – mistakes will be made!

We ask that parents not come onto the court or bench area during the game to speak to your child, the coaches, or the referees. Please be respectful of your surroundings, pick up your own trash, and no foul language.

Division Philosophies:

Grades 1-4:

  • The main goal of this division is to see kids improve and show good sportsmanship. This division is 100% about skill development.
  • Strict man to man defense is played (no zones).
  • For boys and girls in 3rd and 4th grades, screens are allowed, however when screens are set, it is “free game” for the defense and a switch on defense may occur or a double team might unintentionally be created.
  • No screening in grades 1-2 division.
  • Substitutions are made every five minutes.
  • Ball size is 28.5 and 8.5 foot baskets.

 Grades 5-6:

  • The main goal of this division continues to be skill development. In addition, more advanced concepts are introduced.
  • Both man to man and zone defenses are allowed (zone defenses only allowed in the 2nd half of a game).
  • Ball size is 28.5 and 10 foot baskets.

 Grades 7-8:

  • This division is focused more on the competitive side but also places a high priority on skill development.
  • Both man to man and zone defenses are allowed.
  • Ball size is 29.5for boys and 28.5 for girls. All games are played on 10 ft. baskets
