CLASS LIST
Elementary Reading: Tuesdays 4:30-5:30PM
It's as easy as A...B...C...! Reading gives students the ability to access entirely new worlds, from fantastical realms of
fiction to a wealth of knowledge in nonfiction books.
Through this program, Ivy Experience will help students gain confidence in their reading abilities, improving pronunciation
as students read aloud and comprehension as the group discusses stories together, all while making reading fun and exciting.
Students will read out loud to one another, share some of their own favorite stories, and complete weekly reading exercises
that are both engaging and fun!
Elementary Math: Tuesdays 5:45-6:45PM
One block + One block = Two blocks. Addition + Subtraction = The building blocks of math. After years of repetition,
carrying the one and adding multiple numbers have become second nature. For Kindergarten, first grade, and second grade
students, these skills remain to be mastered.
In this class, students will meet the earliest challenges that the world of math presents to them. Through interactive
group work solving problem sets and word problems, students will learn how to apply their skills to everyday situations
presented to them. Math is a seriously essential life skill, but that doesn't mean learning math can't be seriously fun.
Algebra I: Tuesdays 7:00-8:00PM
You can solve for X, but only at the most basic level. As the problems grow more advanced,
so do the strategies needed to solve them. You will need to expand your mind and employ your knowledge of system of equations,
solving by elimination, solving by graphing, and graphing on a linear plane. And that's just a start.
This class will closely track the curriculum being taught in school, so that students get the help they need, when they need it.
Ivy Experience will review the concepts of the week every class, reviewing difficult homework problems, answering questions,
and challenging students with new material to reinforce their skills.
Geometry: Wednesdays 7:00-8:00PM
After years of doodling and coloring shapes in the margins of our notebooks, it is time to begin analyzing the circles,
triangles, and quadrangles of your world. There are theorems to learn, statements to prove, and angles to solve!
This class will guide you through your first semester of geometry, reinforcing the fundamental principles of this unique
sector of math that are being taught in school. Every week, Ivy Experience will review questions that have given the class
difficulty from assigned homework in school. In addition, new problems will be presented that correlate to the units being
taught that week.
Middle School Math and Pre-Algebra: Wednesdays 5:45-6:45PM
We all thought the same thing: what is a letter doing in a math problem? Solving for 'x' is just the beginning for
pre-algebra and algebra students. There are new symbols to learn (variables, parentheses and exponents) and the order
of operations to solve complex problems. While sometimes the equation is presented to the student, oftentimes he or she
must know the fundamentals of pre-algebra to create their own equations and resolve a word problem.
In this class, students will learn to comprehend the concept of X and its applications to word problems and real life.
By reviewing practice problems presented to them every week in class, as well as reviewing homework from school, students
will learn the order of operations, how to deal with parentheses and exponents, and the basic elements of graphing.
Middle School Writing: Wednesdays 4:30-5:30PM
No matter a person's profession or interests, everybody writes. We do it every day in any number of capacities: writing emails,
writing reports, writing letters, and even writing stories and articles. As young students enhance their vocabularies and begin
to read more complex novels and stories, their writing skills mature, as well.
In this writing workshop, Ivy Experience will facilitate writing growth in its students with weekly prompts and projects -
from journalistic articles to fiction stories to memoirs. By sharing pieces in class and practicing with in-class prompts,
students will develop a passion for writing and a confidence in their abilities to create stories, convey ideas through
words, and use their imaginations.
ACT Section 1: Wednesdays 5:45:-6:45PM
Let's be honest, when we think tests for college applications, the SAT usually comes to mind first. But the SAT is not for
everyone - and it certainly does not give you an advantage in the eyes of college admissions. For many students, the ACT
presents the perfect test that will deliver them the best results to send in with their applications.
This ten-week ACT prep course will work to prepare you for the December 2011 test date. Each week will review a different aspect
of the test, from when to leave a question blank, to how to manage their time on the test, to what to write for the essay, to how
to approach questions from each of the four test sections: English, Math, Reading, and Science. We will answer the easy questions
(Do I actually need to know Science for the ACT?) and address the more difficult concerns (How do I achieve my goal on this test?).
ACT Section 2: Wednesdays 8:15-9:15
For those students who could not make the earlier session due to other commitments, this later course will accomplish the same
goals. This ten-week ACT prep course will work to prepare you for the December 2011 test date. Each week will review a
different aspect of the test, from when to leave a question blank, to how to manage their time on the test, to what to write
for the essay, to how to approach questions from each of the four test sections: English, Math, Reading, and Science. We will
answer the easy questions (Do I actually need to know Science for the ACT?) and address the more difficult concerns (How do I
achieve my goal on this test?).
SAT Critical Reading and Writing preparation: Wednesdays 5:45-6:45PM
You may not be taking the SAT until 2012, but January is approaching faster than you think. The time is now to start preparing
for the SAT and mastering one of the most vital pieces of your college application.
In this first session, Ivy Experience will review the essential knowledge needed for the SAT, and then focus on the
English-related sections of the test: Reading, Writing, and the Essay. Each section is distinctly unique, requiring a
different set of knowledge and strategies. While this class will build your vocabulary and grammar skills, most of all,
it will help raise your scores come January.
SAT Math Preparation: Wednesdays 7:00-8:00PM
Not all of us are left-brained, and even for those of us who are, that still does not make the Math section on the SAT easy.
The culmination of years of adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing all comes down to this. You need to be ready for
any question thrown your way, so that every circle you bubble in is the correct answer.
After going over the essentials for the SAT, this class will be focused on everything math, from multiple choice to open
answer questions. Ivy Experience will not only review the principles of geometry and advanced algebra, but equally as
important strategies and tips on how to conquer this portion of the test. After all, the only number that matters at the
end of the day from the math section is your score out of 800.
High School Science Homework Help: Wednesdays 8:15-9:15
Are you always still stuck on a few problems even after spending most of the afternoon trying to solve them? Or for those
who finish sports, drama, or community service obligations later every afternoon, do you dread returning home to lab
reports and problem sets that will keep you awake until late in the night?
Come to GVCO with your Biology, Chemistry, and Physics homework to ease some of this stress. With the close and personalized
attention of a knowledgeable Ivy Experience tutor, you can finish your science homework in a supportive and helpful
learning environment. By using this supportive help system, you will be learning the fundamentals of how to approach
future problems, as opposed to simply answering the question at hand.
